Heath lives in Pisgah
Forest, North Carolina with his wife Jenny and two daughters. He guides
full time for the infamously persnickety trout of the Davidson River,
Smallmouth Bass, and hike in back country trout in the high gradient, waterfall
packed trout streams of Transylvania County and the surrounding areas.
Due in part to the high altitudes and low latitudes, the Pisgah area in the
south west mountains of North Carolina offers year round trout fishing and
keeps Heath busy most of the year tying on flies, pointing out fish, or rowing
a boat. When an off day happens you can find him trying to convince a
trout to take a dry fly, or a musky to eat an oversized streamer, still hunting
deer with a bow, or jump shooting grouse in heavy cover (for this guy if its
not damn near impossible then its not fun, the reward is the challenge).
Still, his favorite thing to do is guide other anglers and would truly rather
see some one else catch fish than catch one himself. Whether the client
be a beginner or a seasoned angler; a challenging fish, drift, or cast can
always be found and the partnership between guide and client working in tandem
to accomplish a goal is always a thing to be remembered and celebrated.
There's a big brown rising to small may flies 40 feet away, against a bank,
under an over hanging tree, across three conflicting currents, no room for a
back cast, and we are fishing a long 6X leader. Good thing we are fishing
a rod that is up to the challenge.
