Hello my name is Frank Smethurst, and I have been in the flyfishing industry continuously since I was twelve years old. Guide, Rep, Pro, Retailer, Buyer, Consultant, Author, Director, Host and Producer are all job titles I have held in my fishing career.
Of all of these jobs, being a guide has long been my favorite. Meeting so many new and different people, teaching flyfishing, and sharing days in the field is one of the greatest jobs on earth. Though I have had these other jobs, I have made it a point to continue guiding whenever possible.
Though I have fished and led trips around the world, it's the Southern Rockies, and Southern Colorado where I choose to live and work.
When I was growing up in Georgia, I fished with the fastest rods that I could find, but It was here in the sandstone canyons of the ancients that I began to realize that I could work rivers more skillfully with rods of a different action, and better feel.
A Scott G series handed to me in the eighties by a favorite client literally changed my fishing life. I had never cast anything so effortless, accurate and easy. Thank you Mike Crockett.
I began to false cast less and less, and roll and single hand spey cast more and more. My mends became cleaner and fewer, and I felt the more delicate bites through the blank as never before. I began to realize how many fish I had previously been missing. It is still my largest trout fishing revelation.
These days there are many other fly rods on the diverse waters that I fish, but I prefer Scott for a few simple reasons.
Scott’s have a certain connection to the line, the fish, the wind and the water that allows me to more fully understand what is going on wherever I fish, and this just allows me to understand the watery realm, have more fun and catch more fish. They are fast and powerful when it matters, and tricky and nuanced when needed. That they are so durable is also of real importance. I am very hard on gear, and Scotts never fail me.
